What's above C1 in Russian

This is the top of our scale, and the level where the remaining difference is not knowledge.

What separates you from a native now isn't grammar — it's the intuition behind style, idiom, and tone.

What that means concretely

You do not make mistakes in any sense a teacher would mark. You make choices, and some of them are the choices a very good foreign speaker makes rather than the ones a Russian makes. The difference is real and it is almost impossible to describe from the inside.

Three places it shows up.

Aspect where the form gives nothing away

Some verbs are biaspectual: one form covers both aspects, and only the sentence around it says which is meant.

✓Когда мы готовили отчёт, мы использовали данные.

✗Когда мы готовили отчёт, мы использовывали данные.

While we were preparing the report, we used the data.

The context is an ongoing background, so this is imperfective — and the perfective is spelled identically. A learner who has been spotting aspect by its prefix has nothing to hold on to. Использовывали is what a reasonable person builds and what nobody says.

Government with abstract objects

At the very top the case is demanded by nothing you can point at:

Компания достигла цели.

The company reached its goal.

The trigger is the verb itself, and there is no family resemblance to help you. This is a list, and the list is long.

Vocabulary where the word carries a verdict

Снисходительный — condescending. Or indulgent, or lenient.

The same Russian word can be an insult or a compliment, and nothing in it tells you which. Only the situation does. This is the layer that no flashcard reaches, because a card has one side and this word has three.

Is there anything above this?

Yes, and our scale stops here on purpose. Above this point the useful question stops being "what level am I" and becomes "how does a Russian say this", which is not a level, it is a lifetime.

For practical purposes — work, study, living there — you are done. What continues is not a course.

What to do at this level

Narrow. General exposure has given you everything it can. What helps now is depth in a specific register: the Russian of your field, or of a particular writer, or of a particular kind of conversation. Breadth stops paying at the top; depth still does.

And find someone who will correct you. At this level nobody volunteers corrections, because nothing you say is wrong enough to interrupt. You have to ask.

Curious whether the test can tell you apart from C1? The top band is built so that both answers look defensible in a dictionary and only near-native intuition separates them. It is the only part of the test where we expect most people to lose points. Four minutes.
