What B2 Russian actually looks like

B2 is the level where fluency stops being the problem and accuracy starts.

You can discuss most things freely, and Russians stop simplifying for you. What gives you away now is precision — aspect, case government, and the words that are almost right.

What already works

You can argue, explain, tell a story with a point, and follow a conversation between two Russians that is not about you. You read without a dictionary at your elbow. You are, by any ordinary definition, someone who speaks Russian.

Which is exactly why the remaining errors matter more: nobody slows down for you any more, and nobody corrects you either.

Where it breaks

Verbs govern cases you would never guess. There is no logic to learn, only lexemes to meet:

✓Мой брат интересуется историей.

✗Мой брат интересуется историю.

My brother is interested in history.

Изучать takes the accusative. Интересоваться takes the instrumental. Same topic, same sentence shape, and only the verb decides.

So do prepositions:

Благодаря поддержке друзей я нашёл работу.

Thanks to my friends' support, I found a job.

Some nouns have a special place-form that the standard table does not show you:

✓Мы гуляли в лесу и собирали грибы.

✗Мы гуляли в лесе и собирали грибы.

We walked in the forest picking mushrooms.

Not в лесе. It is a small closed set of nouns, and each one has to be met.

Aspect goes into negation, and reverses what you thought you knew:

✓Ступеньки скользкие — не упади!

✗Ступеньки скользкие — не падай!

Careful, don't slip.

Не упади is a warning about an accident. Не падай forbids a habit of falling.

And -ся stops being a rule. It sometimes changes the meaning outright:

✓Мой сын занимается плаванием.

✗Мой сын занимает плаванием.

My son does swimming.

Занимать means to occupy. Different word, same stem, and no rule predicts it.

What B2 vocabulary is like

False friends, and the ones you are certain about. Случайно is accidentally, not occasionally. Обидеть hurts feelings, not bodies. You will not look these up, because you are sure.

What separates B2 from C1

At B2 the errors are grammatical. At C1 they are stylistic: the right form in the wrong register, the word that means what you intended but is not what a native would reach for. C1 also brings participles, figurative motion verbs, and the partitive — constructions that are correct without them, but flat.

What to do at this level

Stop studying grammar in general and start collecting government. Every new verb goes into your notes with its case. Every new preposition too. This is dull and it is the single highest-value habit at B2, because government is the thing that no amount of reading fixes by itself.

And read things written for Russians, not for learners. Graded material has done the hard work of avoiding exactly the constructions you now need.

At B2 an overall level tells you nothing. What matters is which of the three skills is trailing — and our test measures vocabulary, cases and verbs separately, then tells you the specific items you missed and why. Four minutes, no signup to see your level.
